                                                                                                               Ojo de Liebre
One of our goals this trip was to see the Grey whales that migrate here in the winter months. There are many lagoons and bays where you can go. We decided on laguna Ojo de Liebre (eye of the Hare ) as it is the closest to highway one. I asked the ag inspector at Guerro Negro about the road in , he told me it was fine for our trailer. Indeed it was as they have R.V. camping at the lagoon . At 5 dollars a night it is a bargain (no hook up’s). There are some palapas close to visitor center as well. We meet a French Canadian couple who had spent the night there , telling us they could see the whales frolicking from shore during the morning and evening hours. It was with this same couple we shared a panga trip out to see the whales .
We were taken out to the whales in a panga skippered by Leopoldo and assistant Antonio. I was impressed with how they approached the whales. Some Pangaderos can be to aggressive to the point of hasseling the whale. Leopoldo has it wired.
We were out in the bay for an hour or more , lots of whales , but no up close and personal encounters. Leopoldo gets a call on his radio from another pangadero. We are off to another side of the bay. We come up on two other pangas full of tourists (the pangas hold ten persons each). This group has encountered a friendly mother and calf who are allowing them to pet them. The ladies in the panga are beside themselves shrieking with joy. The calf is poping his head up next to their boat, letting the ladies pet him. We can’t help but laugh, as we are swept up in the moment. Awesome stuff !!
" Vamanos , Got to go in now ! " Leopoldo orders. Full throttle, we jet back to the dock. I look at my watch , we have been out here almost two hours. Leopoldo had gone over his allotted time with us (an hour and a half) so we could experience this moment. Muchas Gracias Amigo !!!
